Gatsby's Wish

Nick tells readers that Gatsby "wanted nothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say 'I never loved you.' After she had obliterated (erased) three years with that sentence they could decide upon the more practical measures to be taken. One of them was that, after she was free, they were to go back to Louisville and be married from her house -- just as if it were five years ago." (Chapter 6, p. 116)

Assume that Nick is correct. Consider the quote carefully. Show your understanding that Gatsby grows in this chapter by responding to each of the following points in 2 well-developed and carefully expressed paragraphs. Include details that specifically relate to the 2 points listed below:

Paragraph 1)
Use an adjective to describe Gatsby based on this quote and previous evidence in the novel. Defend your choice by including details from the novel.

Paragraph 2)
Explain: Gatsby probably will (won't) succeed in fulfilling his dream(best responses will include specific details about other characters & previous events in the novel).

  1. An adjective to describe Gatsby would be loving. I think that he would be loving because he has always loved her and after all these years he still does. He has never forgotten about her and he has never moved on. When he built his house across the lake from her so that he could see her house this just proves that he still cares about her. I think that he has always hoped that he could meet her again someday. Then when he finally does then he is really happy and nervous. I think that he just wants things to go back to the way things used to be so that they can pretty much start up where they left off.
I think that he will succeed in getting her back because he has never forgotten about her and I don’t think that she has forgotten about him either. Once they were reunited she really started to fall for him again. After they hang out a bunch of times then I think that they will fall in love again. So I think that once she gets rid of tom then they will be able to get together. I think that she can drop tom pretty easily because he has cheated on her anyway and I don’t think that she ever really liked him. That’s why I think that Gatsby will succeed.

  2. If you were to describe Gatsby what adjective would you use?
After reading this quote I think that Gatsby is being selfish and brave. He has a lot of nerve to want Daisy to tell Tom "I never loved you." Gatsby is still in love with Daisy and always will be. They definitely had something special. In November it will be 5 years since they have been separated. All Gatsby ever thinks about is Daisy. He is in love with every little thing about her. He wants her all to himself. He does not want her with Tom anymore. I think that Gatsby is very hurt and jealous that she is still with Tom, even though Tom is cheating on her. It's really hard to for him to move on because he is still holding onto the past. I think that Gatsby would treat Daisy right and would respect her a lot more than Tom. She deserves to be treated right and Gatsby would do a great job.

Do you think Gatsby is going to fulfill his dream?
I honestly think that Gatsby is going to fulfill his dream. They obviously still had the chemistry when they were reunited. I think Daisy and Gatsby would have a strong relationship. All they have to do is pick up where they left off. I feel that Tom is in for a rude awakening. Daisy shouldn't have to put up with his stuff anymore; he is capable of being on his own. Once Daisy finds out that Tom's cheating on her she is going to leave him, and hopefully rekindle the flame between her and Gatsby.

  3. I would say that an adjective to describe Gatsby would be mysterious. I would consider him being mysterious because he always is acting suspiciously and when he is at his own parties, he is always usually standing in the corner and watching the people at his party in silence. Also, he barely ever has an alcoholic drink. He tends to know what he is talking about, and somewhat thinks that he is right. At times he disappears, mainly at random times.

Mainly, Gatsby dream is to be with Daisy. He mourns on the fact that he would just LOVE to be with her. I don’t think he is going to get what he wants. My reason being is because I think he is going to say something stupid and screw up everything and ruin the whole relationship. So, Gatsby better lighten up and start acting like he is not as mysterious and suspicious as he now seems to be. In other words, Gatsby better watch his back.

  4. I think that Gatsby is a very rich man. He deserves everything that he has. Gatsby so far hasn’t done anything wrong for me to think any different of him. But I think that he is a little bit to snotty. What I mean by snotty is that he acts like Mr. Hot Shot with all his money and parties. I think that he could be using his money for other reasons to help people that are poor. But instead he rather have parties and not share with anyone. I think the best way to describe him in this situation would be greedy. I think Gatsby is more of greedy then snotty but at the same time he is very popular and has a lot of friends it looks like it doesn’t bother them because he still has many people to back him up in the story. Those people would be the people that attend his crazy parties. I wouldn’t call these people friends of Gatsby but acquaintance. These people just sometimes seem like they are using Gatsby for him money and parties when they say that they have people attending the parties that Gatsby does not know.

  5. Nikko you said that he is going to screw up and do something stupid. I don't think he is going to but even if he does then i think that it will work out. I think Daisy still has feelings for him and that they will end up being together.

  6. Based on reading this story I think Gatsby is very secretive. Why I think that is because he is telling Nick the truth but maybe not the whole truth. I also think he is mysterious because when he talks to people he might be giving out clues about himself. For example when he talks about his friend Mr.Cody he might be talking about someone from his past.

I think that Gatsby may or maynot get what he wants. How he might get his wish is that Daisy might divorce Tom. How he might not get his wish is Daisy's loyalty to Tom. Daisy might not want to take the risk of leaving Tom for Gatsby. If Daisy does divorce Tom then we won't know who will have custody of their child.

  7. Sydney, although you said Gatsby is loving, he can be a jerk? I deffinately think that if he did screw up that he would somehow get her back. To sum all things up, i think that he may mess up the relationship but eventually will get back together with her and make up.

  8. I think that Gatsby is self-seeking because he only cares about making himself happy and no one else. He needs to understand that Daisy wasn’t the one that left, he was. Gatsby also needs to realize that she now is married and has a family and shouldn’t just pack up and leave because of what Gatsby and her had in the past. This isn’t that past it’s the future and Daisy is now married. Gatsby and Daisy have been separated for almost five years and if he truly cared about her he wouldn’t have left in the first place or would have came back and fought for her before she got married and had a baby. He wants Daisy all to himself and she can’t do that because she has a family now.

Honestly I don’t think Daisy should leave Tom just because Gatsby is back. If she left him it should be because he isn’t loyal to her. Gatsby is the one that wasn’t there for Daisy when she needed someone most. I think though unfortunately that she will find a reason to leave Tom for Gatsby because she will fall back in love with Gatsby. Gatsby just needs to move on and let Daisy decide on her own because that’s what is best for her. Gatsby will most likely not do that though and ask Nick for advice and favors to help get that “love of his life” back. Daisy needs to look at all her options though and realize that she has a baby and needs to make an appropriate life for it too.

  9. Based on my reading, I would describe Gatsby as being clever or shady. I believe this because Gatsby knows how to talk to people. He’s clever because he’ll wait and be patient to acquire what he wants in life. Although he knows how to please and get what he wants, I am still unsure to if he will be able to acquire the love of Daisy. I think of him as shady because he’s mysterious and creepy in a way, he seems to be thinking about Daisy all the time. When Daisy meets up with Nick and Gatsby, Gatsby has to make sure everything is perfect and nothing will go wrong. Lastly, I think he’s clever and shady because he was using interesting tactics to try to attract Daisy. He was throwing shirts onto his bed in a clever attempt to impress her.

As I stated early I am still unsure as if Gatsby is going to get Daisy or not. There are several reasons that lead me to believe that Gatsby won’t get Daisy. First of all, Daisy is already married to Tom. I don’t think that Daisy would divorce Tom just to go for Gatsby. Although Gatsby is probably just as wealthy as Tom is (Daisy really likes money,) I can’t see Daisy doing that. She seems to be quite a loyal wife. Daisy still shows signs in loving Gatsby though. When they met for the first time in 5 years, Daisy seemed to be really interested in catching up with Gatsby. She claimed to want to push him around in “pink clouds” too. I’m not sure about you, but I find that to be quite creepy. If I had to make a guess though, I would say that Daisy is going to stay with Tom and not go back to Gatsby.

  10. I believe that Gatsby can be considered an optimist, a perfectionist and also still relativly mysterious as of this moment in the book. Gatsby shows he's an optimist by dreaming the Daisy will tell Tom tht "I never loved you". Gatsby's perfectionism is shown when he wants everything to go exactly right and how he wants it. The mysteries Gatsby are starting to become revealed like we still don't know what exactly he does or why he has so much money. Many things are still unanswered about Gatsby but that list is unanswered questions is getting shorter with every page read.

    ReplyDelete
  11. An adjective that I think shows that Gatsby likes Daisy is that Gatsby was a perfectionist at one point in the story. I am saying this because when Nick invited Daisy over to his house, Gatsby sent somebody over to cut Nick’s grass. Another example of Gatsby being a perfectionist is that Gatsby had a little greenhouse for Daisy instead of just regular flowers. He also dressed in a really nice outfit for when Daisy came over. Those are some examples of why I think Gatsby was a little bit of a perfectionist.
I think that Gatsby will fulfill his dream because all the odds are in his favor. Daisy is in a bad relationship with Tom which increases the chances that she and Gatsby will end up together. Also, when Nick invited Daisy over for tea, she and Gatsby ended up bonding with each other towards the end of the chapter. That is why I believe Gatsby has a good chance of fulfilling his dream.

  13. I think that Gatsby is celf-centered and affectionate although he does love Daisy, he doesn't think about the baby and how she would feel. He would have to convince her to tell Tom that "she never loved him." Daisy the kind of person that could not be mean to people no matter what it is that happened.
I also think that Gatsby won't succeed in getting her to go with him and not Tom. She has a comfortable life with Tom and also they are rich. I think that she would think about the child that her and Tom have. I think that she would want the child to have comfortable life also.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Gatsby is in a tough situation. He wants the love of his life, but she has already been taken. A good word to describe Gatsby’s feelings egocentric. He isn’t thinking about Daisy in his quest for her. She has a child and a husband. Even though her husband is cheating on her, she has to stay together with Tom for her child. People didn’t think getting a divorce in this book’s setting was acceptable, nor is that an option for Daisy. Though it is romantic that Gatsby is still wanting the life he and Daisy had before, the time has past for their love to be something again.

Even though Gatsby has tried very hard in his pursuit for Daisy, I don’t think he will win her back. He has moved near her house and thrown elaborate parties, in hope she would come, just for Daisy. She has her own life, and her own family now, even if Gatsby and Daisy are soul mates. Tom is also a problem, but we have yet to learn from the novel that he is considered a big probelm. Tom is a very aggressive man, and would probably harm Gatsby, and possibly Nick, if he learned that Daisy was leaving him. Tom is known to get what he wants, because of his mistress and being the boss to people. It wouldn’t even matter that Tom is cheating on his wife; Tom is a hypocrite.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Michalla, I completely agree with you on both aspects. Gatsby is being selfish because he isn't realizing Daisy has a life now, and that he needs to move on. It will be really difficult for Gatsby to win Daisy back because she has many reasons to stay with Tom, but really only one reason to leave him; Dasiy loves Gatsby.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The adjective I choose to describe Gatsby is impolite and egocentric. He only really cares about how he looks to Daisy. Gatsby wants Nick to invite Daisy over for tea but all he really wants is show her all his nice and expensive things. Gatsby is impolite for not considering that Daisy has a husband and a daughter and cannot leave everything she has now behind for Gatsby. In my opinion he is not thinking logical. Gatsby first left Daisy when he decided to join the war. This upset Daisy and Gatsby didn't even consider coming back for her. This shows that he only thinks about himself, making him egocentric.

In my opinion I don't think Gatsby will fulfill his dreams because Daisy won't want to leave Tom and ruin her daughter's life. Even though she cares about Gatsby I still don't think she will leave it all behind for what they used to have. I also think Daisy knows Tom is cheating on her but she does not want to say anything. With this thought she is able to do things without Tom knowing and feeling less regret. Also, Gatsby seems to be always nervous with his actions and will probably make mistakes to ruin what he has going for him. He has to keep in mind that he can't always get what he wants.

  17. I think that the best adjective to describe Gatsby would be shady. This is because when he talks about himself he only says certain things He never really tells you everything that you want to know. It is also kind of bizarre how he has to make sure that everything is perfect for when Daisy meets him at Nick’s house.

I do not think that Daisy will end up leaving Tom for Gatsby. The first thing that makes me think that she will not leave tom is because they are married so she obviously has feelings for him even though it isn’t the best marriage. Even though it seems like Daisy still has feelings for Gatsby she has a child with Tom so that will tie her and Tom together. So I do not think Gatsby will end up with Daisy.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Nikko i agree with you about how mysterious Gatsby is. I also agree with you on how Gatsby will not end up with Daisy. And he will be very upset about it because like you said he usually gets whatever he wants.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Rikki I agree with you on Gatsby being dedicated. He really does his best with all the things that he tries to do to meet Daisy, like the parties and buying nice things to be seen in if they happen to "run into" each other. Though with your response I think Gatsby was trying a little too hard with how he was looking that he wasn't really dedicated in actually making the first move to talk to her and to try to be with her again. Gatsby should have not been so worried about the material things in life and instead worry about talking to Daisy and reconnecting with her. I think he should try thinking of how to act differently to get Daisy.

    ReplyDelete
  20. An adjective that I would use to describe Gatsby is dedicated. Gatsby shows that he is dedicated when he comes back from the war and finds out that Daisy is married, but he doesn’t move on. He tries everything to get her back. He throws parties at his house in hopes that Daisy will come to them. Also he buys expensive things to try and impress Daisy in case they were to “bump into each other.” In chapter five he even has Nick set up a meeting so they can reunite, and Gatsby believes that this will get her to leave Tom and for them to “live happily ever after.”

I believe that Gatsby will not fulfill his dream. The reason for this is because Daisy and Tom have a child together, and Daisy may not exactly love Tom, but she doesn’t want to leave him. She probably believes that their daughter needs to have a father figure close by in her life. Also after Gatsby left her she probably thinks it’ll be hard for her to love him as much as he still loves her. With all this into play it’ll make it harder for Gatsby to fulfill his dreams with Daisy.

  21. Kara, I understand what you are saying and he does only seem to care about what he looks like to Daisy. He is being really selfish thinking that Daisy will drop everything she has and worked for just so she can be with Gatsby again. Also I think you’re right how she probably knows that Tom is cheating on her but I think she is just doing what is right for her daughter.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Nikko I agree with what you have to say about Gatsby being mysterious. I think that Gatsby has a chance to be with Daisy. In the book, it seems like Daisy is starting to fall for Gatsby. Also, Daisy and Tom are in a bad relationship. I have to disagree with you on Gatsby's dream.

    ReplyDelete
  23. An adjective that I would use to describe Gatsby is caring, this is because through all the years he still loves daisy and when he came back from the war he still loved and cared for her. Gatsby can also be very mysterious because of the was he acts and how his personality is.

I think Gatsby and Daisy will end up together in the end because he has loved her for a very long tima. you can also tell that Daisy still has some feelings for Gatsby even though she is with Tom i think she will leave him to get back together with Gatsby

    ReplyDelete
  24. sydney i agree with you and how Gatsby and Daisy will end up being together in the end. I think they will both find a way to make it work and that daisy will leave tom, because she is starting to like Gatsby more and more.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I would descibe Gatsby as caring, because when the girl ripped her dress he gave her money for a new one. In general is also caring about Daisy and will do anything to please her, and make sure shes happy. If Daisy still has feelings for Gatsby then she should leave Tom, because it would be the right thing to do. Its wrong to be with someone but love someone else, because altough you may like the guy your with love is alot stronger then anything and that can make someone realize how much someone can mean. Gatsby will do anything in is power to please and make Daisy happy and that wont change if he really wants to be with her and also i dont think that hes selfish because he wouldnt have made nick go through all of this if he didnt want to be with Daisy, and even though he sounds like a suck up rich snob, hes just trying to do his best to show Daisy the stuff shes intested in. Thats how you can tell that he really is caring

I think that Gatsby will suceed because hes doing every he can to show Daisy that hes the won, and that she should leave tom. Theres feelings for Gatsby that never went away so she should have never made things set in stone with Tom then, and even though she has alot of reasons to stay with Tom. Daisy has one good reason to leave him for Gatsby and thats love, love is powerful and its not something you can just forget, and you notice that threwout the novel since its been five years and Gatsby and Daisy still have big feelings for eachother. Gatsbys showed alot for Daisy and i think that will go a long way for her, and so long at he keeps her happy and shows that he loves her everyday i think that Gatsby dreams will succeed.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Sydney i agree with you Gatsby shows alot for Daisy and feelings never go away and its been five years and he hasnt moved on so this must mean alot to him. I See where Nikko comes from because he talks alot about his money but thats one thing that Daisy likes and Gatsbys trying to show her that he has what she needs, and thats what sydneys trying to say so i agree with you sydney.

  27. I think that based on this quote, Gatsby seems kind of possessive and selfish. I think he is possessive because he makes it look like he has sort of like an ownership on her and their memories together. I think he is selfish because it seems that he wants everything to be like it was before Daisy met Tom and married him. Gatsby wants her all to himself and wants Daisy to say that she never loved Tom on their honeymoon, during the engagement, and even forget that she had a child with Tom. It kind of seems like Tom doesn’t really care very much that Daisy wants to forget everything she had with Tom because it’s not like he ever really wanted to do anything with her at all. He wanted to be with Myrtle instead of Daisy. Although he is angry because this Gatsby comes out to try and take his Daisy away from him and he doesn’t like when people take things away from him that aren’t theirs. If Gatsby really loved Daisy, he wouldn’t have left for the army and he would have stayed and married Daisy when he had the chance and not have her hurt herself to say that she never loved Tom. When clearly she had at least loved him at one point in the past. She now has a family and Gatsby should realize that he cannot just take Daisy away with ought causing hurt and distress to her or her family. That is why I think Gatsby is selfish and possessive.

I am not sure if Gatsby will win Daisy over yet. I think he won’t win Daisy’s heart again because Daisy is already married to Tom and already has started a family with him. I can’t really see her going for Gatsby when she has a child with her husband, but going for Gatsby is half of how she feels for him, and half of how she would like the money. I just really can’t see her leaving Tom, she just seems like a very loyal wife. Although, I can also see that she still shows signs of having feelings for Jay. When they met again for the first time in five years, it still seemed like she was VERY interested in catching up with Gatsby. Still, I think she may stay with Tom and not go back to Jay, but who knows maybe she will go back to Jay so things could pick up where they left off before he went to the army.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Rikki and Kara I agree with both of you. Gatsby really does seem like he cares a lot on how his appearance is to Daisy. It kind of seems like he wants it to be like saying “Yes Daisy I am good enough to have you because I’m very wealthy.” I also think he is very selfish by thinking that Daisy will drop everything just so she can be together again with Jay. Rikki, you have a point on how she may know Tom has a mistress but she is doing the right thing for her daughter.

    ReplyDelete
  29. An adjective i would use to describe Gatsby would be selfish. I think this because he is only conserned about himself and him getting what he wants. He always tries to show off and make himself look good. Gatsby is a perfectionist. He exspects Daisy just to up and leave Tom just because he came back. She married and had a baby with Tom so obviously she was feelings for him. I think it's really rude and selfish of him to exspect that from her.

I do not believe that Gatsby's dream will come true. Even though Daisy still has feelings for Gatsby, she is married and has a baby with Tom. She may not completly love Tom but she obviously has feelings for him. Also i think that Daisy would want the baby to have a father in her life. That would be anouther reason why Daisy wouldn't leave Tom. Gatsby left her once, how does she know he won't leave her again. That is why i think that his dream won't come true.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Kara i totally agree with you about Daisy not wanting to leave Tom. The baby really needs both parents in their lives. I also agree with you about Gatsby being nervous. He is a perfectionist and if he does make a mistake it would mess up everything. He has the mind set of him always getting what he wants but he does have to realize that he can't. If he can't get what he wants he just has to move on.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The words I use when I think of Gatsby is he is egotistical but he is loving. He thinks only about having Daisy back, not the effects on everyone else if she does leave Tom. Daisy is a grown woman with a husband and child, in my opinion she should think about that child. Yes her feelings also matter but if Daisy would leave Tom for Gatsby would the baby still have her father in her life? Would he totally abandon his daughter? Gatsby is very loving also, after five years he is still in love with Daisy and wants her to be his. He tries to get her to love him again by showing her all of the expensive items he owns and his fancy house and cars. With his fancy things it also shows he is egotistical because he has to have the very best of everything.

I think Gatsby will fulfill his dream of having Daisy back. I believe he will use his money, looks, and personality to win her over. Also once they get back together they will just fall madly in love because of their history together and chemistry. I think also when Daisy tells Tom she is leaving he will be shocked and will not really expect it coming.

  32. I agree with WinterFresh's post above, although I think Gatsby is shady and creepy I see where Winter is coming from. When I think about it, Gatsby has done nothing wrong to convince me that he's a bad man.

  33. If I would describe Gatspy in one word using a adjective, I would use the word mysterious. Gatsby shows he is mysterious in mant ways. The first thimg is that he lives in a giant mansion on the West Egg, which is notically poorer part of the town. Second he dosen't want any trouble. Everytime something gose wrong he repays someone or something. I can see with this information that Gatsby is a pretty mysterious person.

I don't think that Gatsby's dream will come true. Even though Daisy is clearly very mad about how she married Tom and she is sad she did'nt marry Gatsby, Daisy will not leave Tom. I honestly think that Gatsby will not have his dream come true, but you never know whats going to happen in this mysterious novel.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would have to say I also agree with Mitch's post above. As I said Gatsby is mysterious, going along with thay he is also creepy and shady. Gatsby hides and looks at people behind corners, etc. He knows what everyone is doing all the time. If you ask me that is a little creepy and shady.

    ReplyDelete
  35. An adjective that best describes Gatsby would be mysterious. He is mysterious because when he hosts a party he is never seen at them. He is always hiding somewhere. He also has all these rumors going around about him and no ones knows if they are true because no one knows much about him.

I think Gatsby should fulfill his dreams of going after Daisy because he is in love with her. Even though she sill has feelings for Gatsby, she probably wont divorce Tom because they are married and have a child.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I would describe as self-centered, and a little insecure. We finally learn the truth about Gatsby in Chapter 6 that his humble beginnings and his desire to achieve wealth have resulted in where we find him today. As a West Egger with new money but lacking in the aristorcratic social graces, he even looks upon winning Daisy over as a conquest. Jay Gatsby believes that if he can dream it, he can achieve it. However, making andd controlling money are much different than controlling another persons feelings. And Gatsby is reminded by Nick that he may not be able to recreate the past.

While I cannot be certain, perhaps Gatsby will not succeed in winning back Daisy for himself. Gatsby seems to have his plan for their future already made up in his mind. One should never really be too sure of himself. It has been said that pride goes before the fall. we also need to consider that Daisy comes from old money and a different social class. And Tom is suspicious of Daisy and Gatsby spending time together.
